Specific Ion Effects on Aggregation and Charging Properties of Boron Nitride Nanospheres

The charging and aggregation properties of boron nitride nanospheres (BNNSs) were investigated in the presence electrolytes different compositions valences aqueous suspensions. influence mono- multivalent cations (counterions) anions (coions) on colloidal stability negatively charged particles was studied over a wide range salt concentrations. For monovalent ions, similar trends determined irrespective composition, i.e., no ion-specific effects observed. Once counterions involved, critical coagulation concentrations (CCCs) decreased with valence line direct Schulze–Hardy rule. dependence indicated an intermediate charge density for BNNSs. coions CCCs weaker destabilization ability followed inverse predominant interparticle forces identified as electrical double-layer repulsion van der Waals attraction. These findings offer useful information to design stable BNNS dispersions various applications, where or their mixtures are present samples.
